29 Nov 2013So I am just back from a whirlwind week at the WBA Wi-Fi Global Congress in Beijing. Our hosts: China Mobile were wonderful. Beijing sparkled (not a hint of the infamous smog, certainly in the first three days). I’m afraid that I didn’t get to see any of the usual sights: the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, or the Wall. Next time.
18 Nov 2013With smart devices flooding the consumer market, the mobile data tsunami topic has been discussed heavily in almost every telecom event over the last two years. One of the hot topic to spin off from this thread is what known as Wi-Fi Offload. More and more cellular operators now looking at Wi-Fi to help them to address the ever growing data demand from their subscribers. At the same time, they see Wi-Fi as a valid option to provide high speed data access to meet consumer expectations.
24 Jun 2013Since the existence of Global System for Mobile communication (GSM), cellular service providers begin to have a very unique relationship with their subscribers – the SIM card. As it says, the Subscriber Identity Module is truly unique and highly encrypted, it is the identity which allows service providers to identify and differentiate their end users. From the end users perspective, it has always been seen as the “key” for them to enter the service provider network and gain access to a wide range of services offered by the service provider.
08 May 2013A combination of large footprint, quality footprint (Wi-Fi offered in high footfall locations) and quality backhaul are all major considerations. One of the largest Wi-Fi networks in the US has been deployed by the Cable TV providers. Cable TV operators in the US have been deploying Wi-Fi networks for their broadband customers to leverage (see http://www.cablewifi.com). With over 100,000 hotspots with high quality backhaul, they are likely to attract mobile operators looking for third party Wi-Fi offload. Mobile operators looking to enable Wi-Fi roaming into the US may be the Cable industry’s most immediate opportunity to further monetize their extensive investment in Wi-Fi.
12 Apr 2013This security measure has become popular recently, thanks to recent compromises at on-line services such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
Those companies and others such as Google have responded by inviting their users to add a second level of protection. The basic concept is fairly straightforward: to confirm that the person logging in isn't an impostor, ask them to provide a shared secret as well as the password.
