Cable Wi-Fi is adding to the data roaming discussion

A combination of large footprint, quality footprint (Wi-Fi offered in high footfall locations) and quality backhaul are all major considerations. One of the largest Wi-Fi networks in the US has been deployed by the Cable TV providers. Cable TV operators in the US have been deploying Wi-Fi networks for their broadband customers to leverage (see http://www.cablewifi.com). With over 100,000 hotspots with high quality backhaul, they are likely to attract mobile operators looking for third party Wi-Fi offload. Mobile operators looking to enable Wi-Fi roaming into the US may be the Cable industry’s most immediate opportunity to further monetize their extensive investment in Wi-Fi.

Recognition for best carrier Wi-Fi offload & roaming product

What a great week we had in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress and proof that all those years of hard work are starting to pay off. We had so many meetings with customers, potential customers and partners that we had to fight over the meeting spaces.

The biggest event of the week for us was the Global Mobile Awards for 2013. We had been nominated for the Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough and were up against four very competitive innovations.

Just read an article posted on GIGAOM and I bet it spells out the feeling of many when come to their nomadic Wi-Fi experience. Being a frequent traveller myself, I do understand the frustration of poor Wi-Fi experience. Mobile operator who started their Wi-Fi rollout should focus on several key areas to ensure their Wi-Fi network stands out from others. The four key areas listed in the GIGAOM article are indeed important – Backhaul, Density, Movement and Device. However, there are two elements which are more crucial and happen way before the above items – Service Discovery and Authentication.
